Group awarded $480k for new instrument

Earlier this year, the Borys Group was awarded $480k from the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust to expand MSU’s capabilities in quantum materials and advanced materials science research.

The award supports the acquisition of a nano-optical microscope that will allow the Borys Group and other materials science researchers to perform advanced characterization of the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of new materials.

The instrument (schematic shown below) is composed of a combined atomic force and optical microscope which will be interfaced to ultra-sensitive optical detectors. The instrument is scheduled for installation in February 2020 and fully operational by mid-summer.

See the MSU’s Press Release for more information.
